A 2003 study by Buckley et al showed in an 8-week study with 51 males, bovine colostrum's ability to improve anaerobic performance metrics when compared to whey protein.
By week 8, those taking colostrum showed significantly higher peak vertical jump and cycle power. Though there were no differences in anaerobic work capacity, one-rep maxes, or plasma IGF-I levels, bovine colostrum has shown to enhance peak anaerobic power during training.
A 2011 study by Marchbank et al shows that heavy exercise can increase gut permeability leading to gut symptoms and heat stroke. A study on 12 volunteers showed bovine colostrum reduced this permeability rise by 80% after exercise compared to a placebo.
In lab tests, colostrum also decreased temperature-induced cell damage and enhanced heat shock protein expression. Showing colostrum can improve athletic performance while guarding against heat-stress.
A 2007 study by Shing et al examined the effects of bovine colostrum protein concentrate (CPC) on immune variables in trained male cyclists compared to a whey protein placebo.
After 5 weeks of supplementation and intense training, the colostrum group showed significant positive changes in specific immune indicators and a trend towards reduced upper respiratory illness symptoms. In short, colostrum appears to support the immune system during intense exercise and regular training.
